WP EVENTS-CALENDAR - THE LIST OF NEW FEATURES
Hello my friends,
I apologize for this long silence and my absence in the forums. My free time has been totally and completly devoted in recent months to the development of the plugin.
To give you an idea of task that I had madness to settle, here is list it of new functionality of the future version of WP EVENTS-CALENDAR.
Of course this list is subject to changes or adaptations. However, it gives you an idea of what will be this version. For information I now estimate the level of progression of my work to about 80% compared to the availability of a beta version.
Note: what I call the Events management is both the creation and modification of an event.
1 - Events
- Management of event types.
- Same as category management in WP but it has had a different name to avoid confusion.
- Management of event types is optional. By default creates a type called ‘No event type‘ that is unique and hidden in case management types was not desired. In this case, the rest of the plugin will not take into account the types of events.
- Otherwise, each type is associated a color
- Designation of the type of event displayed by default in the list in event management
- Each type can be enabled or disabled in the options. This is because the removal of a type is not possible. This would require a treatment of all events that are associated with a type, which would be far too heavy and even dangerous (see for future development)
- Each type is associated a list of custom fields (6 max)
- Each type is associated with a level of access to reserve the display of certain events to certain registered users.
- Events Management
- With its size changed, the form of events management is no longer under the admin calendar. However, to keep an eye on all events, the little calendar appears on the side of the form. A click on a date will display a little summary of the associated event.
- New fields in the management of events:
- Basic tab:
- Event Types
- Phase (optional): planned, ongoing, completed or canceled
- Participation (optional): public, private or by invitation.
- Ability to designate the event as the today event. The event will be highlighted by a post-it superimposed in the litlle calendar. It may (optional) be display the first loading page of the blog by the user (cookie).
- Tab extended (optional):
- Full address of the event location
- Ability to locate the place on a Google map
- Event Manager and contact informations (mail and phone)
- Contact person (if different from leader) and contact informations (mail and phone)
- Number of people expected and cost per person (for example, to a concert or an entrance fee)
- Custom Fields (6 max), whose use varies depending on the type of event
- Comments or notes from creator of the event
- Events tab recursion (optional):
- Management of recursive events following criteria:
- A date in the month + duration (1 by default, 27 max)
- Following a gap of X days (default is 1, 364 max) + duration (default is 1, X-1 max)
- Following one or more days in the week (Sunday to Saturday)
- Following # of week in the month (1st to 4th week + last week)
- To an anniversary date (annual)
- Management of recursive events following criteria:
- Tab except recursion (optional):
- To all rules there is exceptions
- Thus, for each recurring event date the opportunity to:
- Cancel a date
- Changing the date of the event,
- Changing the duration if there is,
- Changing the start or end time
- Improvements of existing fields in the previous version:
- Description: Possible formatting and styling text (Tiny MCE)
- Fields of definition of the dates are broken down into year / month / day.
- Date order entry automatically adjusted according to a date format defined in the options.
- Idem for hours begin and end with AM and PM, if the military format is not selected.
- Possibility to check the validity of the address’ link out ‘, triggering its in a new window.
- In update, when we want to associate an event to a post, you can choose it in the published posts list ordered by categories.
2 - Little calendar
- Navigation: The navigation from month to month and year on year has improved.
- In addition to the change month arrows, a list of months and a list of years can be viewed on request. You can also enter a specific year in the list.
- Button “Today” to return to current month
- Tabs (optional)
- Functional 5 retractable tabs, each optional, appear above the small calendar:
- Switch calendar: it is now possible to display the calendar of blog posts with the same opportunities that navigation events. The first tab allows you to switch from one calendar to another.
- Filter: filtering events in the current month (does not appear when it comes to posts) depending on the type of event, phase, participation and its recursivity.
- Search: Search for one or more events in the month following its title or a keyword in its description.
- Today: Display events of the day in a post-it superimposed.
- Add: Simple form to create an event, only for authorized users.
- Functional 5 retractable tabs, each optional, appear above the small calendar:
- Cohabitation
- The cohabitation of the little calendar and Wordpress calendar is now possible within the same theme.
3 - Large calendar
- Navigation: The navigation from month to month has improved.
- As the little calendar, in addition to the change months arrows, two lists of months in the year before and after the current month are available for direct viewing.
- Size of cells: hence the width of cells in the large calendar is constant, regardless of its content and theme of the blog.
- Create a blank page and specifying its title in the options. Any link clicked in the subject referring to this page (this is optional) will trigger the display of the large calendar in a tchickbox. This calendar will keep all its properties (navigation, etc.) except to open another tchickbox from a date.
4 - List of events
- New widgets: In previous versions of the plugin there is only one widget. Adjustable in list or little calendar of events. And the list of events contains a fixed number of events. Now the choice will be between three widgets, all of which can even coexist on the same blog. In addition to the little calendar there will be two lists that are now navigable :
- Events List 1:
- This is the complete list of events, recursive included. Navigation is done by range. The number of events per range is customizable (see options)
- Events List 2:
- This is the list of non-recursive events. Navigation is done by range. The number of events per range is customizable (see options)
5 - Options
General Options
To allow the user to avoid conflicts with other plugins, but also to provide an aesthetic choice, it is now possible to choose a way to display the details of an event. Avoidance of conflict with Prototype, Mootools, and other frameworks, by the choice of options other than jQuery. These alternatives will be based on plugins purely JavaScript or purely CSS. Therefore:
- Display methods to detail the events
- Tooltips, choose between:
- The plugin jQuery Tooltips. It is one that has been used so far in EC
- EC-Tooltip: it is a pure JavaScript plugin that I have recovered and very much improved.
- CSS Tooltips: completing my thought, is a radical solution to avoid any conflicts. It has the drawback to show a static label.
- None of above: in case the user does not want tooltips.
- Thickbox:
- The plugin jQuery Thickbox: He who has so far been used in EC and is native Wordpress.
- Another jQuery plugin: lightbox. Simply because it is a widespread plugin in the world Wordpress and cohabitation with Thickbox is often confrontational. I abandoned that idea to the extent of the adjustments required for each plugin.
- A plugin pure JavaScript: Shadowbox, by Michael J. I. Jackson, in my opinion one of the best with Colorbox, wich is hardly configurable to use other items as pictures, in a dynamic environment.
- A pure Css Thickbox: implementation of my own
- None of above: in case the user does not display thickbox. This means that the display of the large calendar in a thickbox will not be possible.
- Tooltips, choose between:
- In options, each method Tooltips or Thickbox is awarded a tab in which it is possible to define their styles and preview the result.
- In the directory structure of the plugin WP-EC I have added a directory “user”, in which there are two other directories: “css” and “Images.” These are two directories where you can place personal files. The advantage of placing these files separately is to avoid the crush at a reinstallation of the plugin. Or drown in the mass of files in the plugin. We have now the possibility for the user to select a personal file of CSS general styles.
Management Rights
WP-EC now has rights and capacities in the administration of Wordpress. For each standart roles. Knowing that the role “administrator” has all the rights and “public” does not provide any:
- - Access to the management-Calendar of Events
- - Creation of events
- - Updating events
- - Deleting events
- - Updating events owners
- - Deleting owners events
- - Creation of events in the sidebar
- - Access to rights management options without
- - Access to options without events management types
- - Access to all the options
- - Access to the import / export of events (for the future)
Note : Regarding the definition of a dominant color for an object, it will allow, by hexa calculation, to determine the other two colors: ‘clear’ and ‘dark’. For example for the little calendar, it will be possible to give an overall color than approaching the topic of the theme blog.
Sidebar Options
- Little calendar
- Dominant color of the calendar of events (for all that is customizable in color options, they will only be active for CSS styles native plugin)
- Dominant color for the posts calendar
- Color of the today date
- Ability to designate an image for the background of the today date
- Settings tabs of the little calendar:
- General activation of the tabs
- For each tab:
- Color
- Enabling or not
- Selecting a post-it image for the event of the day.
- Settings of the tooltip:
- Format of dates and hours with a choice “custom”
- Track : tooltip fixed or moving
- Select the display elements of detail of an event
- Parameters of the thickbox:
- Format of dates and hours with a choice “custom”
- Format of the date of the title of thicbox
- Selection and order of the elements of detail of an eventEvents
- Event List 1:
- Navigation activated or not
- Number of event in a range
- Date format in the list
- Width of the list (depending the WP theme)
- Parameters of the tooltip: same items as little calendar
- Parameters of the thickbox: same items as little calendar
- Event List 2:
- Size (width x height)
- Date format in the list
- Display of events prior to current day
Large Calendar Options
- - Dominant color
- - Background image of the cell’s date
- - Position of the day: right, centered, left
- - Parameters of the tooltip: same little calendar
- - Behavior of a click event:
- Display of thickbox (yes / no).
- If not then the choice is between:
- Go to the page of the article associated with the event (if any)
- Go to the page associated with “link-out
- If it is yes: the thickbox settings: same little calendar
Options for the management of events
- - Access to the “extended”
- - Allow the “phase”
- - Allow the “participation”
- - Allow the creation of an article associated with an event
- - Options for recurrence:
- Allow recurrence (yes / no)
- Allow exceptions recurrence (yes / no)
- Colors associated with each mode of recurrence (each recurring event will be indicated visually with a color in the calendar which will indicate the type of recurrence)
- Management of event types (see above, at the beginning of this document)
About Tab
- - Help: A few aid, but also links to the files “How to” online, the Bug Tracker and the forum.
- - Uninstall: uninstall process complete plugin (with emptying the table of options and deleting the plugin in the database of the blog)
- - Credits: No comments
6 - Performances
- Note that the internal development of the plugin has completely been redesigned. Adding all the new features should be associated with increased processing performance in order not to degrade the response time, both for the visitor of a blog as his administrator. However Events-Calendar respects the possibility to operate by Wordpress on a server with PHP version is greater than 4.1.
- The method for loading JavaScript files will go through a module dramatically improving performance.
- The plugin will be provided in two sub-versions’. A ‘compressed’ where all scripts will be optimized to the maximum limit for further shipments. I think essentially the CSS and JavaScript. And a more legible, commented, for debugging. The commentary will be incorporated into the version of operating as a zip file for example.

Maybe I’m asking too much but… do you have an aproximate idea when this GREAT version of the ever BEST calendar plugin will be ready???
Hello Xavi,
Thank you !
The answer to your question is very difficult to say!
Let me explain why.
Every time I thought I was near the end - and it happened several times - I broke my teeth on something I did not expect. For example when I finished the module of options, I thought that adjusting the form of event management would be simple. Big mistake. In fact everything is nested. It’s like a tight mesh, where everything takes place and where the mechanisms are worthy of watchmaking.
There is also the fact that I’m making progress. It’sa good thing isn’it?
But it also sharpens my attention and I am revealing wholesale program defects in parts that I thought I finished. Therefore these parts again.
To not be surprised and disappointed by these findings, many affecting the morale and consumes much energy, I prepared a table of progression, relatively accurate. This does not avoid all unpleasant surprises, but reduces the negative reactions that I have.
So to answer your question, I would say that, normally, and probably a beta test version should be available before the end of this summer.
Best Regards
Heirem
Of course that making progress is a good thing. Or much more, is a great thing!
If you think I can help you programming a concrete feature (an easy one, that you haven’t started with it yet), just ask for help. Maybe I can give you a hand.
Dear Xavi,
It is a generous offer that you made there !
Indeed there is a task you may undertake.
Are you comfortable with CSS?
If the answer is yes then there is a lot of work to adapt to achieve. As I work with Firefox, I am rendering with this browser, and only this one. When I look at my work with Internet Explorer I see that there is much to do!
With the advent of version of IE 8 I think the most reasonable would be to abandon the changes for the version 6. Which is a nightmare in terms of CSS styles!
So if you want I can send you the current version for this work. This work have the advantage of not requiring difficult to merge with the rest to be done. And then I have already done a party for the management of events, which you could support.
What do you think?
I’m quite confortable with CSS, i’ve designed some websites from scratch and I think I could help you. The only problem is that I have a Linux computer, and I can manage to install IE6 and IE7 on Linux (through Wine) but I think it’s not possible to install IE8 at the moment.
Anyway, send me an email with the work, and I’ll try to manage to install a VirtualBox or something like this
Wow… this is a big change… Great!!!
I hope it’ll be finished soon.
Good work Heirem. I’m anxiously awaiting the new calendar.
Wow, that’s quite a list!
Heirem, thanks again for all the work you have done, and continue to do, with Events Calendar.
Dear Xavi,
I understand your argument. For a long time I encountered this problem but differently. I work on Windows XP. But it was to live without problems with all versions of IE together. The best solution I have found is the Virtual Machine! Do you know ?
Did you know that you can easily install a VMWare on Linux? Have a look here and here, It’s a simple and light tool makes your life easier and allows you to work on a single computer as if there were several.
I would love to share my programming work with you. But as far as JavaScript and PHP things are so intertwined .. that it will be difficult now.
If someone is reading line is willing to take responsibility for adapting the CSS to IE I would be delighted.
Thanx anyway
Hi thexwarrior,
Me too! At least one year of work that it is …
Hello Stewart,
Thank you to say it … but I am not at all to complain! I felt a great happiness, and even more that this work will be useful to many peoples around the globe.
You will notice that some of your past comments and suggestions were taken into account
Regards
Heirem,
send me the CSS, i’ll install a VirtualBox (an opensource alternative to VMWare), and I’ll try to install al IEs to check CSS
Thank you Xavi.
I’m not going to send you only the CSS.
You can not do anything if you do not have the entire plugin !
Let me 24 hours, I now finish a function of the management of events.
After that I think that everything on the administrator side will be relatively ready. It is precisely the forms of the events management and the one for the options it need to adapt. I might as well attack the front end side. Finally!
Like that you have the time to install and test the VirtualBox
Best regards
Heirem
Well, I know that with only CSS I can’t do so much
What I wanted to say was: “send me the CSS work”
Dear Xavi,
It’s ok
I’m near to send you the last version !
Thanx again
Very impressive work. I am very excited to test out the beta.
@Heirem,
This is a HUGE list. I better start Selenium soon.
My friend, this **IS** gonna be the best ever…
I would like to assist in the future versions of Wp-events. I am really looking for the ability to have events trigger emails to people. I had spoke with louis and he pointed me to you.
I am looking for a stable events calendar to put on my website. I read that this new version will be ready. I would love to beta it for you if you need it. I just really need to get a calendar on my site and the ” Events are coming soon, stay tuned!” is just not working for me anymore. Please let me know when the new version is available.
Thanks
I just want to give you some words of encouragement and let you know that I am very much looking forward to the new version of your events calendar plugin. Keep up the good work! I check for the release daily.
Jennifer in California.
Bonjour Benjamin,
Amicalement,
Heirem
Hello Chris Bates,
Keep in touch!
Yes it is an idea that I had some time ago. To meet Events-Calendar and another plugin witch send newsletters. Or include in Events-Calendar a module for sending mails. This is not a small business you know! For the moment my only major goal is to finish the current version. And it’s coming soon …
Cordially,
Heirem
Hello Jason Officer,
It will be with great pleasure. Send me an email to talk about your beta tester candidature. My address is on the foot of all page of this blog

Hello Jennifer Baldwin,
Thank you very much ! I love comments like yours. My current time is shared between the everyday life, holidays of my youngest son .. and Events-Calendar of course. This will be a year since I work on this plugin. I hope it will make it as useful as I think. What’s the weather in California these days? Here in Paris it’s really hot!
Best regards
Heirem
I have this same theme but when I go to the comment page the post itself disappears, did you have this problem?
Bonjour,
Merci d’avance.
@+
Heirem,
If there is anything that i could do to help create a module for Events-Calendar for sending e-mails, please let me know. I have a soccer club website that this would be very beneficial.
Finding for a good Cal/Event plugin for Wordpress that provides large full-page calendars as well as a sidebar calendar and also has recurring events is not easy. This next version looks like what I need. Any timeframe updates you want to share?
Hello Heirem,
congratulations to your work so far. I installed your plugin on WP 2.8.1, but it did not show some of the features (e.g. there was no date/time option when writing a new article). Also when accessing the admin panel with IE7 it would crash. Another very weird effect is that it replaces some of the icons on the pages with an animated gif (!).
I am sure you are already aware of this and I am looking forward to seeing EventCalender v7 very soon.
Great work!
/Klaus
bonjour,
Et la mise à jour de la 6.6 beta n’a pas corrigé le soucis.
Tu va sur http://alter1fo.com . Aucun évenement, ni “tooltips” .
Alors que il devrais en avoir :
http://alter1fo.com/?EC_view=day&EC_month=09&EC_day=24&EC_year=2009&TB_iframe=true&width=220&height=250
Cordialement
Heirem
really looking forward to the “Management Rights”
great work so far!!
Salut,
It’ll be great to have option “Make RSS feed from all events”.

Salut!
One thing that I am looking for is the ability to have events show-up like a word press post. If you’re a band and you post the gigs/shows you’ll be playing then each show will have a post that people from other websites or emails can go to and read the details about the show. Will this plugin have a feature like that? Will one be able to Share the event with Facebook or myspace or in an email?
Merci
Bonne continuation,
Dear Ralph Nevins,
Rights management is completed and works rather well. I just spent a few very difficult days for my work as employee. But all went well and I can get back to Events-Calendar
Best Regards
Cher Nico,
Cordialement
Dear Pink Frankenstein,
This is an excellent idea which I took notes. But obviously it will be for a future release.
Cordialement
Bonjour Dada,
Encore ici de quelle version parles- tu ? Tu as essayé quoi au juste ?
Cordialement
Hey man,
Can’t wait for the new version. I am using the current (6.6) and don’t like how anyone can delete events. Can’t wait for 7.0…
I don’t mean to rush you, but any idea on a finish date!
Thanks!
Bonne continuation
Would you have the ability with the new Event Type option to control which Event Types are displayed in a calendar?
I’m using 6.6, and need the ability to display a calendar with general events in a widget on one page and more specific events for a targeted group of people on another page.
Either that or have multiple master calendars.
Is that an option you’ve considered?
HELP !!!
I installed the 6.5.2 version and it did not function properly. Then I accepted the upgrade offer that appeared on my plugins area and now I cannot delete the old version. This is a commercial website set to go “live” in a few days. I am the only admin and I need to get this fixed immediately before my client kills me.
Please reply with how do I get rid of the old version.
Also it would be nice to know where to go to learn how to confidently d/l install, and configure ONLY the latest stable version.
Thank you.
jms
AHHHH Am I going crazy? - Now I have 3 stupid copies of this plugin and I cannot delete any of them. Please tell me how to completely get rid of this.
Please!
- jms
This is the best calendar available but I have had to disable it on my blog because of the problem with images. I am willing to pay for a version that fixes that problem as it was integral to my site!
Hi,
I have tried out your plugin and it looks great, however the last version which was quite a while ago, did not work with Wordpress PDO(SQLite) plugin. Is there a plan for full support of PDO? This would be awesome since it lets WP run on top of SQLite.
If you installed the 6.5.2 version via WP directly, you probably found that you can’t delete it through the WP plugin screen or via FTP or via SSH (unless you have root access to the server). The directory structure is totally screwed up when auto installed.
JMS - the only way I was able to delete the older version is to install WP-Filemanager (which needs to be installed manually and can’t be auto installed as you have to put files into the wp-admin directory.) Once I had this installed, I was able to get WP to delete the 6.5.2 plugin folder.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-filemanager/
Hope this helps!
What can I say… I’m so deeply impressed with the range of options and true functional improvements - which make Events Calendar hands down the preferred EC solution - that I dunked another I had in use on two non-profit org sites and had to drop their databases of events and manually typing in all events for the past two years into EC (pain in the neck, but hey) just to be ready for v7!
Good luck - and thank you for your incredible work.
Dear friends,
I am currently going through a difficult period. My health is fine. However this is not the case for many people around me, and among people who are my dearest. This forces me to work on Events-Calendar in a dotted way and with much less concentration. I also realize that I neglect requests for assistance.
Thank you for your understanding.
hello heirem, thank you for your great work!
do you think that there´s a way to implement some export-funktions? i think many of us would appreciate this function to export one/multiple/all entries to an ICS-standard-file for importing it to their PIM like Outlook, Sunbird or Apples iCalendar …
regards

I think the best way to show my appreciation for your work (since I have no CodeChops) is to simply send you a donation and my thanks. I may only be managing a school’s play, but when this new version goes live - it’ll be a huge help!
Merci!
this plugin looks really nice but i have to wait if you embed a function to repeat an event for every & every other week.
hope for an application for this soon.
Heirem,
I am using the events calendar 6.6-Beta.
The website I am using this plugin / widget on is: http://skwbrewing.com
The display of the date is not the way I want it.
It is displaying like this:
Fri Friday/22/10: Toledo Bob and the Rusty Zippers Band
I would like it to display like this:
Friday January 22, 2010: Toledo Bob and the Rutsty Zippers Band
This link shows a photo of the problem (from the front end of the website):

This link shows the Admin Page of the plugin. (I’m not understanding what to change here in order to get the display of the date and event correct):

Any help you can suggest would be great.
Thanks
Al Pacheco
Hi there, excited to see this much needed addition to the capabilities of wordpress become a reality. I would like to help if I can, I am very adept with CSS and spend much of my professional life correcting sites to be cross browser compatible so if you want a hand getting this plug-in solid for IE let me know.
hi,
There seems to be a bug in a 6.6 version. Once installed with WP 2.9.1
it seems to break adding tags to posts and setting publication times.
Im not quite sure what that might be as the pervious version of your plugin does not have that problem.
Might it be something to do with ajax??
regards and waiting for V.7
How is this new calendar (V7) coming along? Is it released yet? Please advise, thanks.

Hi Heiram: I hope you’re doing better…
Just a simple question : How do I configure the calendar to be shown in Spanish????
Thanks for your help!
Bonjour
Hey, just so you know, ive checked out your dev version 7 and noticed the widget is still a problem, when you activate your plugin, you cannot move or change anything in the widgets area, (drag / drop) or anything. If you de-activate your plugin in the wordpress backend it works properly. I think you may want to invest some time into checking out the latest version of wordpress alongside your plugin update, On my previous version of wordpress before i updated it worked fine, since the wordpress update something in your code is wrong and conflicts with everything else i have going on on my site. I hope you can figure this out as i want to use your plugin, but im not going to render my other site features useless as a sacrifice. All the other features and updates and new ideas are fantastic and keep it up, but the roots of the problems that people have complained about as have i, is the simple things like it even working with the wordpress updated version. The plugin is GREAT, but since the update it will render the widget programmer useless. You should develop more complicated versions once u have a working realease with ALL current versions of wordpress, because complicating more ideas and developing a better plugin on a base that isnt working with the current wordpress with slow your project to a Grinding hault.
Please download the latest wordpress with any version of your plugin, goto appearance and widgets, and u will find what im talking about.
Thanks for your awesome project, I hope to see the final release working soon. It looks great!! Thanks!
