Events-Calendar : Future Options
I would like to address to those of you who followed information that I provided concerning the next version of Events-Calendar. This in order to have your opinion on some questions that I am posed and for which I have hesitations. Your assistance can be precious. Anyway you are the first concerned!
The functionalities of the next version claim options which will make for the administrators to have broader possibilities of personalizations. I first of all gave a title to each group of options :
- General Settings
- Sidebar
- Large Calendar
- Event Management
Below are the first questions that I submit to your attention:
- Should option formats dates and times can be specifics to Events Calendar, or simply take the parameters that have already defined in Wordpress general options?
- In the same thread, is it necessary to define a specific Timezone to Events-Calendar or to take that defined in the general options of Wordress
- Concerning is the management of the rights, is it necessary to be able to allot rights to the Wordpress roles or for each registred user?
Other questions will come if this form of consultation obtains concrete results.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi!
1. I would like to be able to set dates from event calendar separate from the posts.
2. This can be defined by wordpress.
3. it would be very helpful to allot rights via roles for registered users. We have folks that update content that don’t need to do anything else and this would let us allot the role to events as well.
Hi Heirem,
1) I would use the WP date and time fomats by default but let the user override them if need be.
2) Same as Michelle
3) I would go with the WordPress roles
Hello Michelle and Louis,
This public consultation seems to me have been a good idea. Thank you for your responses. I await other opinions of course. So those who read these lines feel free to ask questions and give your opinion. Thank you in advance.
1. I agree with Louis. There should be a default and the Wordpress options defaults would be a great starting point. However, this option should be customizable.
2. This answer is the same as question one. Wordpress timezone can be the default. But there can be an option to change the timezone if necessary when posting an event for a specific location.
3. Wordpress roles should be sufficient.
I agree with Louis as well.
It’s a bit off topic, I realize, but would it be possible to incorporate repeating events — a meeting that happens weekly, for instance — into the next update?
1. I agree with the consensus so far. I can see wanting to override default date formatting on the widget calendar and/or tooltips due to space limitations.
2. I have no need to override the timezone and I’d be fine with using WP.
3. Roles are sufficient.
Hi heirem.
just in case I’ve not said it before Good job.
I concur with everything said so far.
one feature I think would be useful would be a csv file up-loader which would then populate the correct mysql entries.
so in effect you could prepare your upcoming events in bulk in excel or calc etc and then upload that file and have it display correctly in word press.
Would u like me to write one and send it to you?
Best Wishes
Peter
Your event calendar is just about everything I’ve been looking for. Thank you for continuing to improve it.
Here are my thoughts on your questions:
1. Using dates/times in Wordpress defaults are good for me but most people using a list in the sidebar don’t need the year on each listing.
2. Timezone of Wordpress default is good.
3. Personally, I’m the only one to upload events so the role is not needed in my case.
I would like to see in the next update:
Repeating events would definitely be a benefit
a css option for selecting colors to match the site design. Some of the settings in the css file are hard to find to change, not impossible, but hard. And when updating the plugin through wordpress I have to re-upload the css file because the upgrade overwrites it. Maybe draw the css file from somewhere else that doesn’t get overwritten.
an option for an address of the event that might link to “google maps” or “yahoo maps”
When you add a link to the events site it still links to the post and the link is available from the post. I would still like to keep a post of all the events on my site but let people go to the event’s site for more detailed info or directions.
the ability to put the small calendar and a list of events in the sidebar with the widgets.
If I might add a few more comments…
Consistency on the tooltips…right now I have 3 different versions and all show something different. ie: one says Title:, Description:, Time:, etc., one has the title centered, the other flush left and no titles.
I would like to make a printable version of the events, in a list form with date, time, place, etc. Even a printable version of the calendar would be great.
I am unable to change the color of #todayLarge. I cannot get the background color to change no matter how I try the code. In fact, I tried to eliminate the css of that ID and the color remains.
see my calendar at: http://www.thewellministries.org/index.php/schedule
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry to make another post but as you can see I’m really using this calendar today and finding more things that can be improved.
On days where there is more than one event, can the events be listed in order of time of the event vs. the order posted? (See June 14th)
Kris, regarding your last point, those events are in time order…maybe you meant to use 2 PM rather than 2 AM?
and yet another…
when you update an event listing, it doesn’t update the post associated with that listing. would that be something possible or do you have to go and edit the post as well?
how about “black-out dates” (dates that cannot be booked or used for an event)?
Category choices for the posts and possible color changes for different categories.
how can I change the date of an event on the small calendar in the sidebar. ie: I have an event on May 9th and I want to change the css of the date from being red or making it bold to stand out more. I can’t find the css code to change it.
I must say that if you can get all these requests in one package I would gladly pay for it! I think this will be my last request comment as I’m done adding dates for this year.
Stewart,
Thanks for the help. Yes, I put 2:00 pm in the time instead of using the clock feature. I didn’t think about it needing put in as military time.
(maybe thoughts to change that for future for people like me to type in am or pm?)
You help fixed that problem. Thanks again.
Kris
Hello Dear Luke, and thanx a lot.
I think your answer summarizes the best consensus.
Hello Steve,
You should read my most recent posts and you would know that the recurrence of events is planned for the next version. Consult my large calendar here, and go back in time and you will see
Dear Stewart, thanx a lot for your answer and your help here.
Regarding the format of dates. Do you think it would be appropriate to provide a date format for each module? Ie a date format for the widget calendar, another for the large calendar, and one for each list?
Hello Peter,
Thank you very much for your encouragement. Yes, I provided a module to import and export events. In several formats: CVS, Text and iCal. But I think a version without this module will be available before. If the debugging phase following this next version leaves me time, this module will be available soon.
Hello Kris,
Yes, in the next version I planned to allow the specification of a personal CSS file. And the CSS files of the plugin will be better and more commented.
Regarding Google Map and categories of events, I invite you to read more scrupulously my previous posts
“When you add a link to the events …I would still like to keep a post of all the events …” Sorry I didn’t understand what you mean …
The ability to put the small calendar and a list of events in the sidebar with the widgets will be effective in the next version.
The idea of a printable version of the events and calendars is not science fiction but is not scheduled for the next version.
Regarding todayLarge, this item has already been discussed and explained in the comments of my previous posts. I invite you to consult them.
A post generated from the creation of an event can only be updated in Wordpress. Only Wordpress makes this possible and fortunately. This question has already been asked and it will surely part of the future FAQ!
The possibility of linking one CSS directive to the single event will not be available. But you will have other means to put forward one or several events. If you had better read my previous posts you would know it…
I hope that these answers bring you a little of satisfaction however
“When you add a link to the events …I would still like to keep a post of all the events …” Sorry I didn’t understand what you mean …
The link out spot in the “add an event” links the date on the calendar to that link, which may be an off site link. Even when I click on “create a post for this event”, when I click on the event in the calendar, it uses the link added in the link out spot, instead of linking to a post on my site.
What I think should happen when you click on the create a post is that it should override the link out to keep a post record of it on my site. The link out should be put as a link within the post like on the title instead of linking to the link off site.
I hope that clarifies my suggestion better.
Hello Kris,
I see more clearly what you mean. It is a good suggestion. I will reflect on this for the next version. Thank you.
I love you calendar. As a web developer, I found your calendar easy to use, to update the CSS styling to my preferences, and I like the linking to a post for the events. One thing, is there anyway to remove the tooltip pop-ups from both the large and widget calendars. I can go through and edit the code, but not sure what to look for to deactivate.
Hello Bannon,
I have already given the answer. It is a javascript function called “tbshow” for “thickbox show”. Simply put it in the comment. For more details I invite you to read the comments of my previous posts.
Yo people,
We are hard at work to bring you the next (and best) release of this beautiful plugin (well…this is mostly Heirem doing the hard work right now but we are trying to organize ourselves).
Please and pretty please,go and read the previous posts and their comments. Most of what your are asking has already been asked and answered already and our next release will probably provide for it.
This post is pretty specific and we do need your answers. And we also do need propositions on fonctionnalities that have not yet been discussed already. So feel free to add new stuff.
Yours truly,
Louis
Dear Heirem,
I like your calendar a lot. I have seen it on a few pages already. At the moment i’m using version 6.5.2.1 on my page. I’m creating a wordpress webpage and wanted to implement your calendar event. But I can’t get to show the events in the calendar. I checked Kris’ webpage and i would like to implement it on the same way in the widget bar.
I would like to use that calendar v6.5.2 beta 7 as well. But i can’t find it anywhere online to download? Could you send it to me?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Truong.
Hello Louis,
Merci de ton intervention frappée au coin du bon sens !
Thank you for your speech full of common sense
Hello Truong, I saw that you have found it alone
hello Heirem,
yes i couldn’t wait. My website is now online, truong. I still have 2 problems though. I want to show both the calendar (with event list when mouse over) and the event list. In my widget part I can only add the Event calendar once. I picked the calendar with events for now but my goal is to show the event list seperate too. Could you please help me with that?
My second problem is to change the colours of the calendar. I saw other websites having theme colours and that the calendar is aligned nicely in the center of the widget. I would like to change the colors to my theme colors. I hope to hear from you again. I love the the calendar plugin, good job guys
Thanks.
Best regards,
Truong.
I think your calendar is everything I’m looking for in a plugin, however, I’m having trouble with an error message on version 6.5.2.1. I can click on the date to add an event and put in all the data for it, but when I go to my actual site and click on the red date in the widget I see a pop-up containing Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in (long path) /wp-includes/link-template.php on line 360.
What does this mean, and how do I fix it?
Thanks!
Susan
Hi!
I have a small problem: when i set an event in the calendar and than click it, in the pop-out window the days are wrong(Wednesday instead of Thursday for example). the date is right, what could be the problem?
Hmm i have the same problem as Liat too…
hmm, i fixed my event list. just added a new widget and put in all the events lol. anyway, the calendar is centered too. but now how to solve Liat’s problem?
no answer yet… i really like this Calendar and it would be so great to solve this problem cause its confusing.
Truong, how did you add another widget?
hi Liat,
I’m waiting for a reply too. It is not such a big issue though, but it would be nice if anyone knows how to solve it. In wordpress menu, on the left go to ” Appearance > Widget > add ‘text’ to your widgetbar”. In that text widget, you can just type simple html or plain text (my event list is just text in html).
Hello Truong,
To answer your first question I would say that you have no other choice but to wait for the next version, which I work hard now. You will then be possible to put in your sidebar both the calendar and lists of events. In addition, the calendar will switch events to the one of the posts of your blog.
In terms of color this next version will also allow you to change some for all calendars and lists.
However, to answer your second question, I can only invite you to explore the CSS. In the CSS plugin directory there are files. It was in those files that are defined, among other, the colors.
Hello Liat and Truong,
I do not know what to say about this issue, ie. day does not correspond to the date in the thickbox. This problem has already been mentioned some times in the comments, met by a small number of people. I had dealt with this problem for some time without finding a solution to the programming level. Ultimately I think the reason is that the current version does not yet take into account the timezone.
@Liat & truong
I believe this has already been solved by _Toto_ here:
http://heirem.fr/2009/02/20/a-little-break-was-needed/#comment-1617
in ec_js.class.php, line 89: change ‘gmdate’ to ‘gmdate’
That solution worked for me.
@Heirem
Thank you very much for all your dedicated work on this great plugin
and your dedication communicating with everyone here on your blog.
C’est vraiment extraordinaire
Apologies for the typing error above.
I meant:
in ec_js.class.php, line 89: change ‘gmdate’ to ‘date’
I also have to agree with Louis.
Thanks for the replies. I can’t wait for the next version, however this version is working proper for me now.
@JR
Wow thanks, that solved my small problem.
I realize you guys are probably getting tired of answering the same questions over and over but for me, time is a premium. I spent about 5 hours looking for the answer to the “todayLarge” question. Though I finally found it, it would have been a greater blessing to me for someone to point me in the general direction. The biggest problem is that your search tool did NOT find any reference to “todayLarge” in ANY of the posts. I’m guessing the search feature does not work in the comments. Maybe a greater asset to people like me would be to put a few links in your sidebar of some of the most commonly asked questions and where the answers are. I would rather have given $25 to you for the development than to spend 5 hours looking for the answer. You do realize that I had to read about 500 comments to find the answer.
Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth.
Thank you all for the answers and for this great Calendar!
Liat
@Kris
If you cant be bothered to do the legwork, I think you should hire your own programmer and pay him for development and 24/7 support.
But if you want a hint in the right direction, here you go:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=todayLarge+site%3Aheirem.fr
Litterally took me 5 seconds .. not 5 hours ..
I want to be able to set the size ofmy large events calendar.. where do I do that? i have a horizontal plugin and it’s not working wellw ith it. thansk.
Hello Liat and Truong,
I took the time to get back on the problem of the date of an event in the thickbox. Ie when the weekday is not correct. I maybe find a solution for you and I will submit.
Open the file “ec_js.class.php” plugin.
Then go to line 89:
Replace “
get_weekday(gmdate(…” by “get_weekday(date(…”And then tell me if this change has solved the problem.
PS : ouppssssss I didn’t saw that JR gave the solution !
Thanx to him !
I too should read again the old comments …
Anyway it’s a confirmation
Dear JR,

Thank you for your answers!
If you continue in this direction I can give more time to end the development of the next version …
Hello menes,
As I often say, this is a work on the CSS files of the plugin. Look at the comments above please.
Dear Kris,
I know that my blog is not perfect. But I must make my choice and as yours my time is not elastic. We are, with Luke and Louis, in the process of developing a true website dedicated to the support of Events Calendar. Gradually you will develop a knowledge base. In the meantime thank you for your encouragements and your patience.
Love the plugin but there is one feature I wished it had. I post a lot of re-occurring events to my calendar (weekly or monthly events). I would like to see a feature to enter on event and specify a re-occurrence. For example, my club has a weekly event every Saturday night from April to September. Another event happens on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
and yet another that happens every other Thursday.
I would like to be able to enter the event once and set options to re-occur between a start and end date.

Hello,
Great plugin and one of the best out there, period.
However, I do have one question that I have not seen addressed here. That is, will the next version of the plugin be compatible with WP 2.7.1?
One of my clients relies on the calendar heavily, but since it will not work under WP 2.7.1, her site is still stuck on an old WP version and cannot be upgraded until EC is 2.7.1 compatible.
Any plans for that?
Thanks!
Hi everybody,
1) Same as Louis, use the WP date and time fomats by default but let the user override them if need be.
2) Same as Luke, Wordpress timezone can be the default. But there can be an option to change the timezone if necessary when posting an event for a specific location.
3) don’t know
Can’t wait for the beta
Hi Heirem,
I am working on the website http://www.dougschwabwrestling.com — on the side bar, the World Team Trials event on 5/30/09 appears twice. But if you go to the large calendar at http://dougschwabwrestling.com/events/ you will see that it appears correctly. In the admin section of the event calendar, the event is only listed once (it goes from 5/30 - 5/31). Do you know how I can delete that first event so it only appears once? I don’t know why it appears twice.
Chris,
I am using Events Calendar with WP 2.7.1 so it can work. Is there a specific problem you’ve encountered?
For some reason, the same event on 5/30 appears twice on my sidebar widget, but it appears fine on the large calendar page — see http://www.doughschwabwrestling.com/events — The event only appears once in the admin section. Any idea why it appears twice in the sidebar widget and how I can delete the extra entry?
Hello Chris,
Of course the next version of Events-Calendar will be compatible with Wordpress 2.7.1. I get involved there. However, the current version also works with the latest release of Wordpress - as Stewart confirm it - not perfectly in regard to the display in the dashboard, but the functionally everything should go well for your clients.
Hello Laurent,
Thank you for your reply. The idea of posting an event in a different timezone intrigues me. Would you explain in more detail what you have in mind?
For a first beta version, believe me, we are working hard. It will be soon
Hello Danielle Hobeika,
On the one hand do not worry if your comments does not appear immediately, the spam filter has been hard with you
On the other hand you should start by checking your paths in the general settings of your blog. Normally the address of the blog should be the same as the address of the site. Allowing you to view the thickbox.
As for your problem of duplication in the list of events, I did not understand what is happening. I’ll watch that.
Sorry about the multiple posts!
Go to the address http://www.doughschwabwrestling.com — if you notice, on the top right in the sidebar widget, the event on May 30th is listed twice:
» Upcoming Events
Sat 5/30/2009: World Team Trials
Sat 5/30/2009: World Team Trials
We don’t want it to be listed twice, only once. For some reason it appears twice.
If you go to the large events calendar page at http://www.doughschwabwrestling.com/events it is listed correctly.
So my question is do you know why it would appear twice on the sidebar widget but appear correctly on the large calendar? How can we delete the 2nd listing, since it only appears once in the administration section?
At the first place I have to say great job! I am eager about the next version with all the new awsome features.
To points 1 and 2 as already has been said: Wordpress default + customizable.
To 3: I use a great wordpress plugin Role-Manager and it would be great to register the ‘Edit Events’ to it because in Role manager you can edit the capabilities on role as well as on per user basis. I hope it is not too complicated, I just know that for example NextGen Gallery do it this way.
Danielle,
I don’t know why but your address doesn’t work for me. I get an unknown server address. Is it spelled right?
Louis
http://dougschwabwrestling.com/events — you will see that the event “World Team Trials” is listed correctly in the Large calendar as May 30 and 31, but there is an error in the sidebar widget and it says May 30 and May 30.
1. No
2. No
3.Concerning is the management of the rights, is it necessary to be able to allot rights to the Wordpress roles or for each registred user?
Yes
I’d like to see .ics file export so i can import into Mozilla Sunbird.
Hello Danielle Hobeika,
I spent some time studying your problem of events duplications and I still do not understand how this is possible. To solve it I would need an admin access to your website (dashboard), to your FTP and also in your database where are the records of events. If you are willing to entrust me with this informations I could see what is happening and find a solution. Email me directly, the address is at the foot of this page.
Best regards
@Kym,
I will soon publish screenshots of parts of the form of options. You will see the list of rights that you will can assign to users, concerning the next version of Events-Calendar.
@Chris,
Can you provide me the protocol to generate .isc files ?
Hi Heirem,
I really need to set a timezone - have used this plug-in on a few sites for years - have been asking Luke for help with this issue.
WordPress is set to GMT +8 (Hong Kong) but the calendar continues to ignore that and take the date from my server in California!
Have just gone back to an older version for this site as 6.5.1 didn’t work at all - if you tell me which script to add what code to I will happily do that - but for now having my date 16 hours behind is not a good thing - especially for the mothers looking to get their children to class on time….
http://www.littlepicasso.com
Thank you - all help needed and appreciated - other than having a calendar that is always a day behind - I do love the plug-in and have not found anything else that can compare to it….
Help……
… and yes … repeating events would be amazingly helpful for this site!
