An little idea of the current progress
My intention is not to make you salivate or increase your impatience. Quite the contrary. I just want to inform you (again) of my current progress with the next version of Events Calendar.
Given that the current developments concerning the management of events, I can not obviously illustrate this on my blog! So I just took two images of the form of creation (and then update) events.
Several explanations still needed:
- You will notice that the dashboard calendar is no longer present above the form. This idea was already present in my mind but it has become mandatory now whith the interface of the latest version of Wordpress. For those who already use it, you understand what I mean
- You will notice that the dashboard calendar is no longer present above the form. This idea was already present in my mind but it has become mandatory now whith the interface of the latest version of Wordpress. For those who already use it, you understand what I mean
- The absence of this large calendar is compensated all the same by the presence of the small calendar. The admin large calendar always exists but it will be alone in the page. The small calendar will not display tooltips or thickbox here, but space in lower part of him will be to devote to display the contents, according to a click or the passage of the mouse on a date.
- The tab “Extend” is obviously dedicated to an extension of informations concerning an event to create. It will be optional.
- The tab `Exceptions’ relates to the exceptions of recurrences. What wants to say that if you regard the recurrences as rules, the exceptions are… exceptions to these rules. Voilà, I think the images speak about themselves, better than 1000 words. If they cause questions of your share you have the comments to express them.
Thank you in advance for your encouragements
PS : Thank you very much for those compliments that I go straight to the heart.
I just finished the editing tab ‘Recurrence’.
So here is a copy screen:
And now the Exceptions :

Salut!
Merci pour le meilleur calendar pour wordpress!
I have a feature request for you… it is related to this plug-in: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-simile-timeline/
the SIMILE timeline creates a beautiful timeline from the wordpress blog posts. and it happens that due to your feature of ‘create a post’ i can get your calendar plug-in to automatically populate the timeline.
here’s the catch, the ’start date’ & ‘end date’ feature of your calendar is not recognized by the SIMILE timeline. the SIMILE timeline makes great use of the start and end dates that can be given to it directly by plotting the start and end dates on the timeline. basically, what i’m asking is if you could somehow tweak your start and end dates so that the simile timeline recognizes them automatically..
anyways, thanks for such a great tool!
a beintot!

WoW! I’m amazed - that’s something unbelievable
You’re a genius, Heirem
Jaska
Oh my god… Heirem - you are amazing. Seriously, just looking at screenshot number 1 was enough to make me think “YES!!! Post Category!”, which was closely followed by “Event type! This man is a genius!” then “Event Status as well, what a treat!”
But then getting to screenshot two, I was really quite overcome when I saw the ‘Customisable Fields’ part, my brain literally shut down!
I remember in your previous post you mentioned ’searchable’ fields (I think?) Does this mean it applies to all the fantastic new fields and functions you have created please?
Thank you again for the preview, I am so looking forward to the release of the next version!
Amazing! Can’t wait until it’s released, it’s almost exactly like the other calendar system we use, but of course sooo much better that the content is directly on our site!
Wow. This looks really impressive and obviously a huge leap forward from the current version! Thanks, Heirem, for all your work.
This next update is a wonderful move forward!
Just getting the Recurrence feature in the next update is fantastic. Looking forward to seeing the “Update Available” message when reviewing my plugin list.
Wow…
A lot *LOT* of improvements incoming.
Keep us informed!
Greetings from México!
Thank you Jaska,
Thank you Mosey,
Thank you Misty,
Thank you Juanjo,
Thank you Kevin,
and Thank you Stewart !
Thank you very much my friends.
) are really encouraging!
Your compliments (sometimes a little excessive
I try just to realize all the ideas and suggestions that have been here submitted. With my style and I am pleased to see that it satisfied you.
You can go back to see the post above: I added another screen copy
But I expected criticism and questions. For example: what is this broad field (textarea) behind the blue tooltip? What Google Maps has done in Events Calendar?
But since you do not ask, I will not answer …
Dear Jon,
Merci beaucoup !
C’est une excellente suggestion !
Indeed it would be a nice sidebar widget this timeline! It’s nice to see and easy to use. It found its place in Events Calendar I agree with you.
But I decided to freeze my ToDo List for the moment. Because what is in the works is already complicated enough.
This will be something I will treasure for a next, next version
Best Regards
et à bientôt !
Heirem,
It is looking very good… One question: Have you worked out time zone support? (crossing fingers…)
Thanks!
Eric
This is brilliant! Can’t wait for the release!
Superbe travail Heirem, toutes mes félicitations.
I have one question though. Looking at the Recurrence screenshot, how would I go to create an event like every last monday of the month?
Can’t wait to try it out and a HUGE THANK YOU for your generosity.
Louis
Hi, this is really great plugin
Is it possible to have link from widget calendar that go directly to the post?
Woaaw. Impressionnant.
Cinq questions :
5. Y a-t-il moyen de tester cette bêta ?
Hello Eric,
Yes, the taking into account of the time zones in accordance to the Wordpress option is planned. I know the exact manipulation should be applied to dates. I dive it in Wordpress itself. But I have not yet implemented. This however will be operational for the next version
Thank you for your patience Brian
Hello Louis Lapointe,
Merci pour vos félicitations.
It’s really very simple, to answer your question. Some of the rules of recurrence are combined together. For example, for the last Tuesday of the last week of the month, simply select the Tuesday in the weekdays AND the last week in the list for weeks
When that version will be distributed there are several options to help you. In addition to a newsletter you will have a true forum on my blog. And cards like “How to” will also, be conducted through the pages of my blog.
However it is not yet clear whether this is done on my blog. In effect this will depend on what we will say with Luke Howell
Hello Enes,

Yes, it is also planned.
And other opportunities to be selected in the options of the plugin.
Bonsoir Education,
Cordialement
Wow - wow! This is exactly what I have been dreaming of - combines the functionality of PHPCalendar with Wordpress. I know feature set is fixed - would like to add the wish list: Preset template for an event or location - saving significant data entry for address, etc. OR allow using existing event as template for new entry!
I can hardly wait.
Hello Christopher,
That would be the ideal Yes, I understand. But far too complicated to do! Especially since, like everything in life, nothing is ever completely isolated, and therefore an event in a calendar
But I keep this good idea in a corner of my head and I will think to it for a next version.
Best regards
Great stuff!
I keep on waiting…

C.
Thank you so very much Heirem for this prompt answer. Not only are you very generous with your time spent on the plugin but you are also very present to us, users. I know that means mucho personal time.
As soon as you release an alpha or beta release, I’ll go and test it. Right now, I’m building a web site for a non profit org and I have attracted a couple of friends to help me test it (including a Jaws using person I’m trying to convince). When I get my hands on your plugin, I’ll try and get the gang to help me and test it.
Do you have Trac installed?
And thank you again my friend,
Louis
(du Québec)
VERY BEAUTIFUL!!
That is some very nice work you have done there …
But i saw something on the screenshot … you have to upgrade your wordpress installation …
J’ai testé le big calendar et ça ne fonctionne pas …
Tu peux m’aider heirem ?
http://www.enseignons.be/agenda/?p=3
in future releases i’d love to see an events-RSS-feed
(soon means of course not the next release, i noticed that you closed the list for this one its of course a lot work i understand that.)
thanks for the good work till here and for the future good luck, if you need luck i mean

Dear Louis,

Thank you for your encouragement
I did not know Trac!
You made me discover it and I find it interesting.
Could you give me YOUR vision to use that I could make this service?
So that I do not misunderstand
Best regards
Hello dear Ron,
This is me will you out my tongue, because what you don’t know it’s at every stage of my work, I test it with Wordpress 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7. As well with Firefox, IE6 and 7, Opera and Safari
I did the screenshots with Wordpress 2.6 because I have not yet adapted the plugin with the menus of the latest version :p
Best regards
Cher “Cours enseignant”,
je vous ai répondu directement en email, mais je n’ai pas encore reçu votre réponse
Dear Willi,
Yes we talked about this possible development. But as I say I froze specifications. Things are quite complicated as that. After the release of the next version it will surely arise many bugs, despite all my efforts. Then we see the events RSS feed in a future next version isn’t it?
This is not really lucky that I actually would be needed, you’r whrite
Best Regards
Hello Heirem,
I have been using Trac wiki and issue tracking system on my dev machine for quite a while now.
The real beauty of this software his its capability to link many aspects of what we do as developpers: bugs and enhancements tracking, milestone planning, links to the subversion repository, documentation through the wiki. All of this helps involving and organizing the community.
Every time I start a new project, I create a new Trac for it (or put it on an already existing one and add a new component). This enables me to focus on what I want to do while letting me putting stuff there I don’t want to do now but which I still want to remember, even far out ideas.
The wiki helps me write documentation, even for features that do not exist yet. I must say i can be quite verbose on these from time to time since I don’t have a good memory. So coming back to an old idea won’t mean “Hey! What was I thinking? What was this about?”
The main thing with Trac is that instead of having users ask for enhancements in a blog comment, they can just put it in a ticket and then you can triage them, putting them on some milestone or invalidating them. They see where you are going, YOU see where you are going.
Heirem, if you want to see an example of one of my Tracs, just send me an email. Since the trac runs on my home machine, I don’t want to publish it. It’s about one of my open source project. For a while, it enabled me to work closely with the original author. I’ve not work on it for some time now but when I get back to it, I’ll help me start exactly where needed.
Hope that helps.
Louis
Hello,
I tried to post this comment a few days ago, but I can;’t find it anymore. So, sorry if I’m repeating myself!
Anyways, I was wondering if there is anyway to limit or abbreviate the event title as it appears on the EventsCalendarLarge. If I could set the title length to a set number of characters, then the calendar grid could have a uniform size throughout. I was think that if I did this, it would still be possible for the full event title to appear in the pop-up when the mouse scrolls over the event. Does that make sense?
I was think about trying to use the limit displayed characters function, something like:
substr($message, start, length);
but I am unsure where I would insert such an argument. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks so much for the plugin and the great support!
Jim
Discovered this one:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ical-for-events-calendar/
really great…
you can cross iCal-Support of your list
Best regards
C.
Dear Louis Lapointe,
It makes me feel really interesting. Thank you very much. This seems a much more structured solution than the method through a forum. This does not prevent the use of a forum, however. I would say that the two channels are complementary. What do you think Louis?
I planned to take care of the monitoring tools when I finished the latest version. The time seems me so long now. I think sometimes to propose an intermediate version, without the functions of import and export of events. But I tell myself that if I do so I’m having difficulty following the rise of bugs while developing the end of the version. Especially if I want to propose a forum and a newsletter
At this time I will consider using Trac. And it is possible that I am asking for help or advice. If you do not mind
Best regards
Hello jdchumanities,
Yes, you have already asked and I responded
here. You should subscribe to the thread of comments that you would receive by mail the answers
Dear Cabotine,
Thanx very much !
Still something interesting to fit in my schedule
Heirem,
I really do not mind. I,m ready to help you.
Yes, you do need the forum and the blog and all those comments. This make a living community. And it’s fun too
Trac just help you organize things.
Let’s say for instance that you do publish an intermediate version. You then can create a milestone exclusively focused on import/export and later milestones for what we (those users who ask so much…) ask you to provide.
Milestones need not be huge code base releases. A milestone can be a tiny improvement or bug fix. The way to do it is when you release something, you create a branch in git or svn or cvs (whatever you prefer) and that’s where you bug fix the release code.
Anytime you need me, you just ask. I’ll be there. I’m usually available fridays through mondays (inclusive). You just need to shout
By the way, if you want to talk, just tell me. I’ll send you my skype or msn address.
@all
What do you think about Heirem putting up a Trac system? Would you help by providing tickets and even documentation? Info here: trac.edgewall.org
We all want this beautiful plugin. Are you ready to help making it the WP killer app?
For my part, I do have some requests I do not say right now. Just waiting for Heirem to publish. But I’m ready to help. I know about PHP, HTML, CSS, SQL and I’m learning a lot about WP (new to it but making a theme actually).
Are you ready to help? Are you part of the community?
Any chance to get a copy of the current plugin? I really like the functions and it seems that it is not “alpha” state anymore.
Maybe a good idea to start making beta builds publically available :).
Great plugin! I’ve loved using this plugin! Thanks so much for your efforts. I have one issue, however.
This plugin conflicts with any other plugin that currently uses mootools. Specifically the Featured Content Gallery plugin.
Any idea of why this might or if it might be fixed? Thanks.
Heirem,
Your plugin has been working great on our clients’ websites for many months. Thank you for all of your hard work.
I have recently discovered a problem with the [[EventsCalendarLarge]] shortcode.
If the page contains other shortcodes before this shortcode, the other shortcodes aren’t correctly parsed.
In order to fix this, I made the following (simple) change to events-calendar.php (I’m using v6.5.2.1).
Find this line:
$before_large_calendar = ec_strstr($content, $ec_match_filter, TRUE);and add the following line immediately after it:
if (function_exists('do_shortcode')) $before_large_calendar= do_shortcode($before_large_calendar);This will cause the $before_large_calendar variable to be parsed for WP 2.5+ shortcodes if the function exists.
James
Heirem,
I’m not sure if I could do it with custom fields, but it would be great if you could “paint” the background of the cell of the minicalendar of the sidebar, depending of the category of the post created (or looking at a custom field, if possible).
Dear Louis Lapointe,
What a great enthusiasm!
This makes me happy. The idea of creating a community around the plugin but also the development tools is interesting. I had already thought of. But this requires much energy and time. But we can try, yes. Especially as the number of people who come here fairly regularly grow up.
Louis a question, is it possible with Trac to create help files, type in “How to”? It’s one of my little project for Events Calendar. Because it seems increasingly necessary.
As for chatting online, why not. Send me mail and I we can get on msn if you wish.
Currently I have to admit that I suffer a lot with the development of the plugin. The exceptions recursive part is almost finished, but what a great job it was! I think I’ll call my next post: Blood tears and sweat!
Best regards
Hello Dick,
Yes it is such a good idea. But you are wrong on one thing, the current version is really an “ante” and not even alpha. I promise to propose a version when it is “really” usable.
Best regards
Hello Casey,
Do you remember this post : Your current problems with Events Calendar ?
For my part I do everything I can to minimize conflicts. Loading javascript libraries following Wordpress recommendations. And I’ve worked hard to isolate as much as possible the jQuery domain.
At the moment, yet to avoid these conflicts, I work that the next version allows several ways to view tooltips and thickboxes. Each with a completely CSS, without any code. Regarding changes to the calendars contents, the Ajax way will not be mantadory. But in this case the user will be forced to reload the page
And all this will be configurable by options. I do not see what I could do more on my side!
But if you have any suggestions, I am always open to study of course
Best regards
Hello James,
Thank you very much for that clarification. I consider all this, test and integrate them into the next version. Thank you also to mention here because it can help those affected.
Best regards
Hello Xavi Ivars,
What I propose to do is to have a background color for each category in the large calendar events, tooltips and thickboxes.
The customizable fields will be pure informations, obviously no trigger actions. it would be too dangerous
Colorize cells of the calendar according to the category could transform it into a hideous patchwork
Best regards
@all
I added in this post a screen copy of exceptions recurrence tab. It lacks some things, but it gives you an idea of what it is
Best Regards
@Heirem,
I think colourize table cells could be a good improvement to the plugin. You can have a look at an example here: http://www.racocatala.cat/, at left sidebar.
They use different colours for music, culture, presentations and other events, and a special colour when there are events from more than one category at the same day.
Anyway, I understand it could be difficult to implement at the moment.
Dear Xavi,
I promise to think about all this. The problem is not the difficulty. I am currently on parts of the plugin much more complicated than that. But as I have nothing done with the “Event types” (category it’s for Wordpress
), all is still possible.
You were right to send me this link. A picture is better than thousand words
Best Regards
Hello Heirem,
I you go on the Trac website and check their documentation, you’ll see they use their wiki, which is an integral part of Trac, to document their whole project. They have the TracGuide, TracFaq and so on.
So, using the wiki, you could build up everything you need, the full documentation with print screens, a frequently asked questions section and a Howto section.
You can even give registered users the right to write so they can help you and, judging the enthusiasm generated by your plugin, I do feel that many people would love to help you build this. I, for one, would love that.
Hope that answers your question. Otherwise just shout. I’m watching this thread.
Tourelou
I have been using the calender event plugin for over a year and absolutely love it. However, this latest release appears to have a problem - I can’t delete an event. I click on the red X, then ok and nothing happens. I even tried the cancel button just in case they got crossed, and no, same thing happens. Is there a work around?
@Roni:
Same thing here: I’m using the plugin with WP 2.7 and cannot delete events… thought that maybe some other plugins might interfere and deactivated them - didn’t help, still can’t delete entries.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Not to forget: Thanks to Luke and heirem for providing this great plugin!
Contact me via email. I sent you an email but it got bounced back. I have some questions and information to share with you. Look forward to hearing from you.
Dear Tourelou,
Thank you for those informations. Trac is undoubtedly interesting. Now that I again news from Luke Howell, maybe the support of the plugin will not necessarily on my site, even if I would part of a team.
For the moment I am totally focused on the outcome of the next version. All my real free hours are devoted to it. I think this will be just after the time that I make available a beta version that things will have to organize and help from everyone is welcome.
Your enthusiasm and the desire to want to do for this plugin is comforting. At least thank you for that
Best regards
Hello,
@ Roni, @Daniel,
I hastened to see how involved the removal of events with the latest version of Wordpress after reading your message. And everything works fine on my side. So I do not understand what happens to you.
To give you a more informed opinion it would require more elements about your problem. Since this deletion is in the dashboard, I do not see how, apart from giving me access to the administration of your blog. There remains the possibility to send me by email the XHTML sources file of your Events Calendar dashboard page, of course filled with events.
Best regards
The version of WP that I am experiencing the problem with is 2.6.2; Daniel reports his problem with 2.7. You say you could not recreate the problem on your system - is that the same system you develop on? If it is, the code probably isn’t the same as what we are running. I looked through the plugins area I didn’t seem any xhtml source files. I run the calender as a large calender on it’s own page; no widget involved.
I’m still bulding by site and I love this plug-in.
Unfortunately, there is a conflict with d-13 slideshow(http://www.d13design.co.uk/d13slideshow). They can’t seem to work simulteanously on the same page. I’m not sure if anyone else has tried using both together successfully as I have not been able to. I think it’s on their end but I thought I’d let you know. Any suggestions are welcome.
Hello Cybele,
You have the same problems than Casey (among others). I invite you to read the answers I have already made. They also apply to you
Best regards
Hello, Heirem,
It is so nice to see your progress again - and I would like to point you towards another calendar plugin for WP which is pretty fast and also usable
It contains categories etc., it is pretty simple and doesn’t have any problems with other plugins or themes, because it doesn’t utilise javascript
It may be useful for you some time.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/
Keep up working, your progress is amazing!
Hi Heirim,
This is almost exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thanks for your hardwork, and it’s something I’m going to be looking at implementing.
There’s two features that I really, really need though - and I’d be willing to contribute a donation if it’s possible to add. the first feature is more important to the second feature:
1) An “I’m attending” button for logged on Wordpress users. I’m wanting to use the calendar in a Worpress MU/Buddypress site, and have events that a user can sign up to.
2) An “invite” option upon creating events - an e-mail sent to Wordpress users informing them of the event creation.
Iain.
Dear Mijk,
Merci beaucoup cher ami
That gives me pleasure of having a little news from you. But it is true that I didn’t give much on my side
I downloaded the plugin Calendar, I did not know it, and yet I found much of it and not only on Wordpress. With my opinion it is a very good solution for small needs. It is well realized and could constitute a solution for the users with few requirements. However it does not offer a calendar in the sidebar and the recurrence is really minimalist. You is mistaken on the Javascript, there is a little in this plugin. But it is very difficult to occur some. The advantage of the Javascript is to be able to have the powerful possibilities of Ajax. What avoids reloading a page for example, when we changes of month in a calendar. This you say make well speak about it because the next version which I prepare, and on which I work enormously, normally will allow, on options, to limit really much the use of the Javascript. Of course to avoid the conflicts of plugins. It will be with each administrator to tweak his requirements.
Best regards
Hello Iain Buchanan,
I admit that I do not understand very well your request.
These are two functions that do not concern this plugin:
- The login can not be limited to a plugin. It can access to the blog, with rights more or less limited. A connection relates the blog as a whole. Then what is provided in the next version is able to create events directly from the public part of the blog without having access to the administration of the plugin.
- Sending an email to inform the people of the existence of a new event, this is the job of a newsletter plugin. The idea has already crossed my mind. But then it’s need to coupling Events-Calendar with a plugin of newsletters distribution. To automate the task. It is an idea that I keep under the elbow. But that will not be available for the next version, sorry.
Best regards
I need some help. I can’t change the color to make it go with the theme. Can you help me. The plugin is great but i can’t use it if it doesn’t match the theme.
Is there a way to have a seperate calendar for each page? For example, have the west coast page have seperate entries from the east coast page?
I love the widget, and I can’t wait to see the new version, you are amazing. In the current version, is there a way to possible re-align the calendar so that Sunday is to the left, and Saturday is to the right? Perhaps it’s a USA thing, but that’s what I see most often. Thanks so much
Lisa (Washington State)
I am ecstatic and can’t wait. I really can’t. I wish I could donate at this point in time but believe me you are on the list
@Lisa Russel
You can find the option for the first day of the week in the Wordpress settings page.
Hello Cindy,
You do not give me enough informations about the colors you want change. However, if you can handle the CSS rules then there is a plugin directory which contains all the CSS files required for these changes. If you go this way, think to save your changes before updating the plugin. With the next version you will can change these colors more easily. I’m working on it
Best Regards
Hello Josiah,
What calendar do you speak? One in the sidebar or in a page of your blog? As far as the one in the sidebar, have several different calendars, depending on your theme, but I do not think this is possible. With the large calendar in a page or a post, not in the present state of things. Sorry for you.
Best Regards
Hello Imokon,
I just hope not to disappoint you after about these nice words …
Your blog seems to encounter a conflict of plugins, then please email me directly, my address is in the footer of this page. I will submit you a version that maybe will solve it.
Best Regards
Hmm I’ve tried emailing you but I keep getting a “essage from yahoo.fr.
Unable to deliver message to the following address(es).
:
Sorry your message to hxxxxxxx@yahoo.fr cannot be delivered. This account has
been disabled or discontinued [#102].”
This is me trying to send an email to your rmwpmaster email address :/
Sorry
Hey, I think I just found out why both my thickbox-date-popup is displayed incorrectly and I can’t delete entries (=dates). Both times the responsible script is trying to access the relevant files in my website’s root directory while the WP installation is actually located in a subdirectory.
Does anybody know how to make EC find the proper destination?
Something like this would be invaluable for the admin side also, so automatically display scheduled and past posts!
Similar to: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-simile-timeline/
(which is close but not ideal)
so excited about the option to set up recurring appointments! Any idea when this will be released?
